The Word

The Word

Explore.

Show me Thy ways, O Lord; teach me Thy paths.
Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me:
for Thou art the God of my salvation;
on Thee do I wait all the day.
~ Psalm 25:4-5 ~

Time.

So teach us to number our days,
that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
~ Psalm 90:12 ~

Enlighten.

Without a revelation from the Divine,
man cannot know anything concerning eternal life,
nor even anything concerning God,
and still less concerning love to, and faith in Him…
~ The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine 249 ~

Voice.

All thought, speech, or writing
takes its essence and life
from the one doing the thinking, speaking, or writing.
It has the person in it, along with his character.
And the Word has in it the Lord alone.
~ Apocalypse Revealed 200 ~

Spiritual.

…because the Word is the Lord’s and derives from Him,
it cannot possibly exist if it does not contain within itself
such things as belong to heaven, the Church, and faith.
If this were not so it could not be called the Word of the Lord
nor be said to have any life within it.
~ Arcana Caelestia 2 ~

Within.

…in every particular of the Word there is an internal sense
which treats of things spiritual and heavenly,
not of things natural and worldly,
such as are treated of in the sense of the letter.
…For the Word is written solely by correspondences,
to the end that there may be an internal sense
in every least particular of it.
~ Heaven and Hell 1 ~

Discovery.

The Lord’s Word is an ocean of truths, vast and deep,
from which all angelic wisdom comes,
although to those of us who do not know
about its spiritual and heavenly meanings
the Word appears to hold no more than a jug of water.
~ True Christianity 350 ~

Converge.

…the Lord has given the Word to mankind, and also to angels,
so that by means of it they may be with Him.
Indeed the Word is the means by which earth is united to heaven,
and heaven to the Lord…
~ Arcana Caelestia 3476 ~

Opening.

From the Lord proceed two things:
Divine love, and Divine wisdom…
and in its essence the Word is both of these;
and as it conjoins man with the Lord,
and opens heaven,
it follows that the man who reads it from the Lord,
and not from himself alone,
is filled by it with the good of love and the truths of wisdom…
In this way man has life by means of the Word.
~ Doctrine of Sacred Scripture 3 ~

Veiled.

…in [the literal] sense
the Word is like a man clothed
whose face and hands are bare.
All things that concern man’s life,
and consequently his salvation, are bare;
but the rest are clothed.
In many places also where they are clothed
they shine through their clothing,
like a face through a thin veil of silk.
The truths of the Word
also appear and shine through their clothing
more and more clearly
in proportion as they are multiplied by a love for them,
and are ranged in order by this love.
~ Doctrine of Sacred Scripture 55 ~

Illuminate.

…anyone who reads the Word with the intention of being wise,
that is, of doing good and understanding truth,
gains instruction according to his intention and affection.
In fact without his knowing it
the Lord flows in and enlightens the mind,
and when he cannot grasp what is said in one place in the Word
the Lord imparts to him understanding from others.
~ Arcana Caelestia 3436 ~

Guided.

…Read the Word and believe in the Lord,
and you will see the truths
that must be those of your faith and life.
…everyone whose soul longs for it
can see the truths of the Word in a state of light.
~ Apocalypse Revealed 224 ~

Lamplight.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,
and a light unto my path.
~ Psalm 119:105 ~
