Encircled by Autumnal trees – Their sunset boughs with saffron leaves – I watched a fiery leaf let go And landing at my feet below, I sensed a call to make a start, A tugging onward at my heart.
A lane led off into the wood And so I left the place I’d stood, But progress down the path was slow – Extinguished leaves, a failing glow – I stumbled through the brambled grey And lost my boots in wild affray!
Surrendering my life-torn feet To soothing balms applied by sleep, My sweeping dreams of moon-white snow, Cleaned down a track I’d yet to know And made a place for dawning Spring – A joyful sense of gathering.
Were subtle voices stirring leaves? I woke and blinked at dazzling trees, Bright paving touched my humbled soles – An avenue of Sunlit rows… Not trees, but dearest friends in queues, All reaching out to lend me shoes!
